Spyware detection and removal

If your computer displays any of the following symptoms, you may have a spyware problem:

Your computer reacts slowly and seems to be getting slower.
Your homepage keeps reverting back to a questionable site, even after you reset it to your preferred home page.
You get lots of pop-ups, sometimes even when not actively surfing the internet.
When you search for information, a new and unfamiliar site handles the search and returns questionable results.

Your internet browsing habits may be monitored and even controlled by malicious software running on your computer without your authorization. In extreme cases, these programs can even use your computer's processing power and internet connection to proliferate the program writer's harmful and potentially illegal wares.

To detect and remove known spyware, the following applications are commonly used and may be downloaded freely:

Suspected Virus

A computer virus is a dangerous computer program with the characteristic feature of being able to generate copies of itself, and thereby spreading. Additionally most computer viruses have a destructive payload that is activated under certain conditions.

Most new computers come with a virus scanner pre-installed. However, these are limited Anti-Virus programs whose usefulness only lasts as long as the free trial update period (usually 3-6 months).

To be clear, maintaining an up-to-date virus scanner is absolutely necessary if you value your data. Noteable anti-virus protection software includes NOD32, avast! and AVG Anti Virus.

Most companies offer trial versions of their software. Grisoft has taken this a step further and offers a completely free version of their AVG Anti Virus product, which remains a favorite among the starving student crowd.

Also note that if you intend to install a new virus scanner, you must be absolutely certain that any existing anti-virus software has been completely removed. Failure to do this could result in an unusable computer!
